What an ugly color!
I hear it all the time from my husband– “What is that?!” He of little faith. Of course, once he sees the finished look, he gets it; he understands what I’m trying to accomplish.
I admit, I love figuring out how to wear the clothes that other people tend to shy away from. This H&M poet blouse for example? It’s a bright greenish-yellow (grellow?) that I admit is not an easy color to wear. But fun to figure out!
The more I take risks on these not-so-easy-on-the-eyes pieces, the more I love them! They’re definitely wardrobe items that provide shock value, but are easy to temper with the everyday clothes already in my wardrobe.
I used basic color theory to create this look. When you see colors next to each other on the wheel, they’re called analogous colors. They usually match well together and create a color scheme that’s cozy and pleasing to the eye. Colors across from each other are called complementary. These colors always make the opposing color pop. For example, put blue and orange next to each other, and each looks purer and a truer representative of the color.
For example, when I was creating the look for this grellow blouse, I decided on a combination of analogous and complementary color schemes. I knew I wanted the top to be the star of the day (usually it’s the shoes!) so I paired it with the cobalt suede wedges. Since blue, green, and yellow are next to each other on the color wheel I knew my shoes would appear a little less noticeable. However, since I did want the shirt to shine, I paired it with a necklace that had a little bit of the contrasting complementary color, which is pink. And it goes without saying- basic denim goes with everything. All together, it works!
So, next time you see a new item that catches your eye, but you’re just not sure how to make it work, remember your color wheel! It can help show you how to make matches and make those “ugly” colors shine!
What color are you afraid to wear? Have I tempted you to give it a try? Let me know!
